Creating a Lovable Mascot & 3D Animated Commercial
Back in 2010, we were in early discussions with Steven Swan, CEO of TidyBuyer about making a simple little animation to help promote his new business. What started off as essentially a very basic cartoon with minimal animation and effects soon grew into a much bigger and more complex project. After a face to face meeting and subsequent Skype video calls we both had a good idea of what we wanted to achieve.
From here our lead artist Gio began sketching some character concepts of the main character Bob. Once the concept was signed off we moved onto modelling.
With the character concept approved, we then moved on to building the base model in Maya. As Bob had a very distinctive style, a bespoke mesh was required. Once the model was approved, the next phase is rigging which involves creating a hierarchy of bones and controls through his body to deform him and allow Bob to be posed and animated. A simple facial control system was made to aid in smooth facial transitions when his mood needed to flow according to the circumstances of the story. Some rough storyboards had been laid out around this point but on this project, our client was happy to let us have free reign from here as he felt completely safe in our hands. We had also created a large selection of images and banners to feature on the TidyBuyer website as well including an animated banner for the homepage.
After roughly 2 months hard work getting all the shots animated and rendered out, we could move on to compositing and editing. The voice over previously recorded were a little too wordy for the final videos and had to be carefully edited to cut out unnecessary fluff that slowed the pace. There are actually two versions of the video, a buyer version featured Bob, but also a seller video aimed at the suppliers who can also sign up on the website. An alternative version of Bob was created called Fred. Just a simple hair and tie change but as this was a last minute request from the client. Though tricky to accommodate with such a short turnaround, we got it done, on budget and on time for our client.

BubbleYum – Animated Commercial
The concept was developed by Directors’ Gio Chronopoulos of Talos Creative, and Kevin Snyder of Twisted Genius Media to produce a spec animated commercial for a brand of bubblegum. We worked together in a very tight schedule to produce this animated spot.
Client: Twisted Genius Media
Project: 3D Animated Commercial
Directed by: Kevin Snyder
Concept design by: Gio Chronopoulos
Storyboard by: Paul Cohen
Animated by: Gio Chronopoulos
We began by sketching out the spot with storyboards to refine the concept. This was followed by a final concept of our alien character.
Next began the process of taking the 2D concept and building the 3D models of the characters and rigging them.
Kevin Snyder, who wrote and directed this CG commercial wanted it to appeal to both parents and children. “The children should be drawn in by the bright colours and the out-of-this-world journey the boy takes, while the parents should be taken in by the message that BubbleYum can be used to keep their children entertained and occupied. I wanted to make a commercial that is seen through the eyes of a child. Child-like wonder is something that people everywhere can relate to, even if their grown-up day-to-day lives have caused their sense of wonder to atrophy a bit. The fact that the spot is completely free of spoken dialogue and instead relies solely on images means that it has a universal appeal and audience. In fact, everything in the spot—from the themes to the imagery—translates well into almost any culture and can be used to capture the imagination of people everywhere”

Talos Creative was contacted by PayPal’s Global Marketing Team to help develop an internal animated video that would help get the whole company from all levels and departments to understand the bigger picture of what PayPal aimed to accomplish in next few years.
We were invited to visit to their headquarters in San Jose, California to meet with the Global Marketing Team to discuss ideas and the direction for the video.
Client: PayPal
Client Creative: Heinz Waelchli
Art Directer: Gio Chronopoulos
Lead Artist: Gio Chronopoulos
A small cast of characters were needed to tell various small stories. These are some of the character models we created. A simple style was chosen partly influenced by teh very quick turnaround needed.
PayPal is a fast moving technology company so there were daily changes to the software and features resulting in an intense production which kept me on my toes. The video was initially set to represent features due in 2016, but within a few weeks it became 2015 and half-way through production one of the features was already being trialled in a few select towns and cities. Overall it was an amazing experience to meet the team and see their secret showcase room and what they have planned.
